BUILT IT™ QUESTION & ANSWERS

WHAT IS BUILD IT?

BUILD IT is a baseless builder gel which is available in ten beautiful shades. It can be applied in 1-3 structured layers to create incredibly strong short-medium length overlays and extensions. Build It has been designed to have an effortless self level formula. Build it can be used as a thin base layer or another Magpie base coat can be applied before Build It if technicians prefer.

IS BUILD IT HEMA FREE?

YES! Build It is HEMA, IBOA & DI-HEMA free, Vegan Friendly & Cruelty free.

WHICH CLIENTS ARE SUITABLE TO WEAR BUILD IT?

BUILD IT is a very versatile product. It will suit many. It is perfect for clients who are looking to strengthen their nails with a natural looking overlay or extensions. Clients can have Build It soaked off or infilled. Gel colours and our other art lines can be applied on top of Build It enhancements or they can simply be top coated.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN BUILD ME UP AND BUILD IT?

Build Me Up is a harder gel system than Build It, which means it can crack and chip if it is not applied in 2-3 structured layers. Build It is slightly softer so can be applied in 1 structured layer without cracking. We recommend infilling Build Me Up however Build it is excellent for soaking off or infilling.

CAN YOU INFILL BMU USING BUILD IT?

YES you can. BUILD ME UP is slightly harder which means BUILD IT can go ontop without any issues.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN GIVE ME STRENGTH AND BUILD IT?

Build It is thicker in consistency and stronger than Give Me Strength. Give Me Strength can be applied in single layers to add strength to natural nails or applied in structured slip layers. We recommend applying Build It in 1-3 structured slip layers. Both can be infilled or soaked off. Some clients’ natural nails are too flexible or long for a structure gel like Give Me Strength – when they put pressure on their nails this can result in pocket lifting. Therefore by using a stronger product like Build It instead of Give Me Strength for this particular clients nails, the flexibility is reduced and pocket lifting is prevented.

CAN GIVE ME STRENGTH BE INFILLED USING BUILT IT?

BUILD IT is a stronger product than GIVE ME STRENGTH so we would recommend soaking off GMS or filing it down to the base layer before applying.

WILL THERE BE BUILD IT TRAINING?

YES! We have a variety of NEW courses being released alongside BUILD IT.

❤︎ BUILD IT Masterclass for builder gel beginners

❤︎ BUILD IT Conversion for those already trained in builder gel

❤︎ BUILD IT Conversion Webinar | FREE when purchasing our complete BUILD IT Collection

❤︎ EXTEND IT Mini Masterclass for those new to extensions or wanting to improve their skills

Contact your Magpie Educator for more information.

DOES BUILD IT SOAK OFF LIKE GIVE ME STRENGTH?

BUILD IT is SOAK OFF. Here we quickly removed bulk with a 100 grit file and soaked. We don’t recommend soak off at every appointment with any product. This can become dehydrating for the nail. We would recommend infilling the product.

DOES THE CONVERSION WORKSHOP COME FREE WITH THE COMPLETE COLLECTION?

YES! Anyone who purchases our BUILD IT COMPLETE COLLECTION will receive a FREE place on our conversion webinar. Magpie will be in touch via email to confirm a date after purchase. Our FREE CONVERSION WEBINAR will be hosted live online by one of our talented Magpie Educators. Educators will demo natural nail prep, builder gel overlay application, infill & removal. E-notes will be included. There is no qualification or certification from the Conversion Webinar.

WHICH TWO ARE BEST TO CREATE A GEL OMBRÉ?

One of our talented Educators Amanda Byrne @amanda_bynre_nailartist has created two ombrés using BUILD IT. Watch Amanda create her ombré using BUILD IT by clicking here.

BUILD IT BLONDIE & PAMPAS
BUILD IT FROSTED & BUNNY
Do we deliver products to NORTHERN ireland?

YES. Northern Ireland is through magpiebeauty.co.uk. Southern Ireland you order via @magpie.europe or @nsinailsireland. They are releasing BUILD IT alongside St Patricks Day.

DOES BUILD IT NEED A SEPARATE BASE COAT?

BUILD IT is a baseless system. Make sure to apply the first layer as you would a base coat, nice and thin making sure to seal every free edge and cure for 60 seconds. If preferred BUILD IT can also be used alongside any Magpie Base.

WHAT IS THE CONSISTENCY LIKE?

The consistency of BUILD IT is not too thick, but not too thin that it runs into the side walls. It holds shape perfectly during application whilst self leveling effortlessly. Please check out our recent application reel by clicking here where you can hopefully see this.

HOW LONG CAN YOU EXTEND USING BUILD IT?

You can easily create a medium length extension using BUILD IT. One of our talented Educators Anona Grice @nonaphillipa has used BUILD IT CRÈME BRÛLÉE & BLONDIE below.

IS BUILD IT GOING TO REPLACE BUILD ME UP?

We are a brand that listens to our customers. Our customers will decide if this replaces BUILD ME UP. We do encourage everyone to try BUILD IT. We think you are going to be completely OBSESSED. There is a FREE Conversion Webinar for anyone purchasing the BUILD IT Collection. This is great, cost effective way to keep up with education.

VALENTINES NAIL ART STEP BY STEPS

TEAM MAGPIE have already started getting creative for Valentine’s Day with their clients! Check out their fabulous designs, step by steps and comments below.

Magpie Educator Sarah Mills @bysarahnailartist created her classic valentines design by using  RED LOBSTER for her block coloured nails, then mixed RED LOBSTER and RED GEL PAINT for the hearts over a base of PINK ELEPHANT.

Magpie Educator Anona Grice @nonaphillipa created her sacred heart valentines set by using JELLY BABY and RED LOBSTER with WHITE and BLACK ARTYgel over BMU BUFF. Anona shares, “My clients have all been going for Sacred Heart designs, unusual Heart variations and even Anti-Valentines Day with Cruella Pigment and Bleeding Hearts. My clients are very cool and always want something different.”

Magpie Educator Amanda Byrne @amanda_byrne_nail_artist used a base of BMU BUFF and BLACK BETTY for her design. She then painted french tips and hearts using BLACK ARTYgel and added gold with PARTY ANIMAL and finished with LAD.

Magpie Brand Ambassador Alice Sanderson @onenailtorulethemall shares the steps to her ombré valentines design,

1.Apply a clear base of GAG, cure for 60 seconds, then apply two coats of GMS CUPID.

2.Apply VELVET TOP and cure for 30 seconds.

3.Using a fluffy brush and apply MALLORCA compact powder, starting from the tip of the nail upwards to create a gradient effect. Cure for 30 seconds.

4.Apply GMS CLEAR and file edges.

5.Using a DOTTING TOOL and striper brush, paint two dots side by side and use the brush to drag them into a point to create a heart. Add a few dots with the tip of your striper brush

6.Finish with LAD.

Thank you to our Ambassadors and Educators for sharing their inspirational sets! Remember to tag us in your recreations and use the hashtag #everythingmagpie @magpie_beauty for a chance to be featured. We can’t wait to see!

SAVE WHEN YOU SPEND ON OUR FABULOUS GEL COLOUR RANGE

SHOP OUR GEL COLOUR RANGE BY CLICKING HERE

HEMA FREE GEL COLOUR STEPS

1. Prep the natural nails using a CUTICLE TOOL to remove any non living tissue. Remove surface shine from the nail plate using a 240 ZEBRA FILE (not a buffer or wooden file). Scrub the nails using PREP & DEHYDRATE. Apply a layer of GET A GRIP to the nail ensuring the free edge are capped. Cure for 60 seconds.

2. After application of GET A GRIP, apply GIVE ME STRENGTH and cure for 60 seconds. You can build structure into a wet slip layer before curing if needed. Apply between 1-3 layers of GMS depending on the nail type. If required you can refine with a 240 grit zebra file once cured.

3. Apply the first coat of chosen GEL COLOUR over the entire nail, ensuring the free edges are capped. Cure for 60 seconds. Use a liner brush to get closer to the cuticles if needed. Repeat the same step to apply your second layer.

4. Paint a thin layer of chosen top coat onto the nails and cap the free edges. Cure for 60 seconds. Leave the nails to cool for around 60 seconds. If using TOP IT OFF, finish with cuticle oil. If using LIKE A DIAMOND, wipe away the inhibition layer using a lint free wipe and CLEANSER, then apply CUTICLE OIL.

TIP: Use a new lint free wipe on each hand and use different areas on the wipe for each nail to eliminate rubbing the inhibition layer into the surrounding skin.

MEET TEAM MAGPIE: BA RACHEL MANSFIELD

Could you please introduce yourself to and tell us about your nail career so far?

I’m Rachel (@prettyperfectnails2017) I’m 39 originally from Hertfordshire but moved to East Sussex in 2007. Where I started a family and had 2 children now aged 11 and 13. I have a degree in Product Design BA(hons) which was my dream as a child to become a designer, but I never went down that path, instead I worked in an office.

In 2017 I decided that I wanted to start a hobby so looked into becoming a nail technician and took a local course and qualified in gel nails. Also that year I found Magpie Beauty and I have never looked back since.

So while being a mum and an office manager I did nail designs in my spare time, creating simple and easy to follow designs that any nail tech could follow along with.

Then COVID hit and the world changed. We all became an online network nail group within the beauty industry. This is where I decided to ramp up my nail step by steps to help all different levels of nail techs do nail art. I also qualified in acrylics and manicure.

In February 2022 I was asked by Magpie Beauty to become a brand partner, which of course was a dream come true. My nail journey just went from strength to strength from a few Instagram followers to over 50k in a short space of time. Then in 2023 my dream got bigger and I was asked to become a Brand Ambassador for Magpie and represent the amazing brand they are today.

Towards the end of 2023 I decided to open my own home salon and share my love for Magpie and my design to the world around me, which is where I am today.

Could you share some pictures of your nail space and explain your style and inspiration?

As my home decor is white and opened planned, I decided to go along the lines of simple but effective. Displaying the whole Magpie Gel Collection, glitters and foils on my walls and my nail step by steps in frames giving my clients that warm homely feel when they come and have a treatment with me.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to begin a career in the industry and create their own nail space?

Advice I’d give would be to take that leap and follow your dreams to become a nail technician. Invest in yourself and education to become the best nail tech you can be. Research brands that can offer well produced products that have high specs and good reviews. Also the support behind the brand and the education that is available when you need it.

Which nail style do you enjoy creating the most?

I do love a good floral design, but to be honest I like all designs on all levels. From lines to ombré to cute little characters the options are endless!

What is your favourite professional range (gel, builder, acrygel, acrylic) to work with and why?

Favourite range, well this is a hard one to choose, but I think I have to go with the whole gel range. From the base coats of rubber up and get a grip to the give me strength or build me up, colours and top coats. As Magpie does different products in each of these ranges there is always a solution that will work with a client and their style of natural nails to give your clients the best gel service that you can.

Looking back what advice would you have given to yourself at the start of your nail career?

I wish I had started earlier within the nail industry, but as I suffer with anxiety I put it off over and over again, telling myself I’m not good enough. But looking back now, I wish I had not listened to my demon on my shoulder and followed my heart. Don’t put it off, take that leap and believe in yourself!!

What is your favourite Magpie nail art range to work with?

I think my favourite is there Art Gel (old style) and there new Artygel range. The options are endless with using them as single colours, to custom mixing them to create nail designs or even using them as a full nail colour. They are easy to apply and use for detailed work plus they are a non wipe product.

I have to also add the nail art brushes, I have used and tried so many different ones but I always come back to the original (black handled) striper brush or detailer, I can’t live with out it and do all my hand drawn art with them.

Which Magpie techs inspire you?

I don’t think I have the space to name everyone but each Magpie tech that uses magpie has their own way of using the products and their own style. But I guess without Mrs Magpie and her team, we wouldn’t have the amazing products we have to create the amazing work that we all do!

What are you top 5 must have Magpie products?

Just 5….!!!
1. Get a Grip (all shades)
2. Build me Up ( all shades but I do love Buff)
3. Top It Off
4. Art Gels / Artygels
5. Striper Brush

P.S and the rest of the whole magpie range!

Where would you like to see yourself in 5 years time?

5 years, well… I’d love to have a well established home salon. Maybe train up to become a Magpie Educator for Sussex and teach Nail Art. Even do some solo lives, but watch that space. But to be honest still using the amazing products that Magpie have and bring out in the future (I may have to win the lottery to fund my addiction lol)

Thank you Rachel! We have loved hearing about your inspiration nail CAREER.

FOIL SANDWICH SNOWFLAKE STEP BY STEP

Follow our fabulous Brand Ambassador, Rachel Mansfield @prettyperfectnails17 steps to create the perfect freehand snowflake design below!

  1. Apply a thin coat of BELLA ROUGE and cure for 60 seconds.

2. Using your FULL FOILED GEL apply a thin even coat over the whole nail and cure for the relevant time.

3. Take a small piece of your POPPY-JO foil and stamp all over the nail where you wish to have the foil.

4. Mix up BELLA ROUGE and VELVET TOP to create a glass colour and cure for 60 seconds.

5. Using your DOTTING TOOL and WHITE ARTYgel PAINT, place a dot as your centre of the snowflake and then 2 dots above and below and either side. Don’t cure just yet.

6. Using your STRIPER brush, take a tiny pin head size of WHITE ARTYgel PAINT and from the middle dot draw a line down, up, left and right joining the dots together. Cure for 60 seconds.

7. Using your STRIPER brush or DOTTING TOOL, which ever is easier add little “tear drop” shapes at the end of each point and 2 either side of the line at the top, cure when happy for 60 seconds.

8. Using WHITE ARTYgel PAINT and DOTTING TOOL place little dots in between the line round the middle and use your STRIPER brush to drag out the dot to create a diamond shape. Also using the DOTTING TOOL place 2 dots at the end of the top and bottom line and the left and right. Once happy with the snowflake, cure for 60 seconds.

Thank you to our fabulous Ambassador Rachel Mansfield @prettyperfectnails17 for sharing her beautiful snowflake step by step with us!

Remember to tag us in your recreations and use the hashtag #everythingmagpie @magpie_beauty for a chance to be featured on our Instagram. We can’t wait to see!

Much love…

MAGPIE TECHS FESTIVE NAIL ART TUTORIALS AND TOP NAIL ART TIPS

We have rounded up some of our very talented technicians Christmas nail art designs this week. We think you will all agree these sets are incredible! Thank you to our Magpie techs for kindly sharing their top tips and step by steps with us all below.

We are so impressed with @studio.one.o.nine’s classic grinch design! Emily shares how she creates custom sets for her clients below,

“For custom sets I have an in depth consultation with my client and ask what ideas they may have and what they would like included like colours nail art features etc, I then take this away and illustrate a design plan on procreate which I then send to my client to confirm they are happy with the design, I can then use this a reference during the appointment to help speed myself up so I know what I’m doing! I make sure to pre mix any colours I’m going to be using too to save time!

For this design it took about 2 hours for the base colour and nail art so I allocated about an hour per hand, the over all appointment took 4.5 hours as it was a removal fresh set of full on tips before the nail art too which took about 2.5 hours! I usually use other designs as a basis for how long I’ll need I’ll look at previous character art and see how long that took me to create and use that as a rough guide, in normally do characters on my mums nails on my days off so I tend to use those appointments as a guide for scheduled client appointments.

Top tips for arty gel, work thinly, build up the layers, for blending and shading I use small tapping motions to create a seamless blend, and a little goes along way! I now have enough grinch colour to last me the next 3 christmases. My go to brush for blending is also the ILLUSTRATOR! And I’ll mix between all the different length PREMIUM LINER brushes too.”

We were blown away by @joannepattinson_nailartist’s incredibly detailed Christmas scene design. Joanne shared with us,

“For this kind of set my clients will discuss with me what they are after and we can then plan the time needed. On this particular occasion my client was unsure on what she wanted so let me have free rein! I had seen some lovely scenery pics on cards and jumpers etc so fancied giving it a go. I spent some time looking on Pinterest for snowy Christmas scenes and narrowed it down to 5 pictures to recreate.

I purposely booked out longer with this client as this was the first time I had done anything so detailed so was unsure on time needed. These took around 1 hour and 40 minutes for painting. I had prepared my nail art products before the appointment so I knew exactly what colours, art gels, Inkies and brushes etc would be needed. I think that’s key. If your organised your less likely to get flustered and panicky with designs like these.

My top tips are just play around with colours, don’t be afraid to mix a few colours. Arty gels are a god send. They make drawing the art so much easier as the gels so controlled. I only recently changed brands to magpie and the pigment in the gel polish is amazing and so nice to work with again making it much more enjoyable to work with. VELVET TOP COAT I think is a must when doing nail art. It stops the colours from bleeding together, and also helps you to control the nail art much better”

@hayleynormannailtechnician had so many requests for a tutorial of her amazing Christmas bauble nail art after she posted these to our Magpie Facebook Group. Hayley has kindly shared these with us below,

“To create the bauble nails I started with 2x coats of MIDNIGHT SKY and a VELVET TOP COAT. I then used the applicator brush and popped on some MALDIVES pigment powder and slightly dabbed it on tissue, I just gently pressed on the nail as I wanted a very faint pigment in two places top and bottom and gave a good coat of GMS.

I used the WHITE ARTYgel and DETAILER BRUSH – I find if I run the brush through the artygel it helps give you that finer line. I started a C shape to the outside of where I placed the pigment. As I reached the bottom of the C shape i lifted the brush as I wanted a more fainter line. Repeated this step on the other side. Then used the Artygel to fill in the top of the bauble and cured.

I place a dot of FRESH OF A DAISY and BLUE GEL PAINT on my ART PALLET and then with the OMBRE BRUSH I gently picked up FRESH OF A DAISY and placed it in the top right corner and faded it into the middle. Cleaning off my brush I then picked up the BLUE GEL PAINT and placed it bottom left then gently ombre’d the two colours together. Using a coat of GMS and cured once I was happy with how it looked.

Using a DOTTING TOOL I then added a little star onto each bauble and created a little shadow using the detailer brush. Once I was happy with my design I used VELVET TOP COAT – cured.

I added little details using WHITE ARTYgel with my DETAILER BRUSH. Using a DOTTING TOOL I popped on LAD just into the Baubles to give it that 3D look.

For the Snowflake nail. I applied MIDNIGHT SKY x 2 and a good scrub with P&D. Using the Nail STICKERS 002 I placed one in the centre of the nail and gently applied MALDIVES pigment using my APPLICATOR BRUSH to create the ombre look. I removed the sticker to create that negative space in the middle. Used GMS to coat, then a VELVET TOP COAT. Added a line using a STRIPER BRUSH and SILVER PAINT to both sides of the negative space. Added the snowflakes to finish off the nail.

Most of my clients had fairly plain nails – I introduced them slowly to just one nail with nail art and they have never looked back. They love how it just break a solid colour up and gives them that little extra something and in their words cheers them up.”

Last but not least, we absolutely loved @unicorn.beauty19 classic Christmas chrome design. Michelle shared her top chrome nail art tips with us below,

“My top tip when working with chromes is that it is key to make sure there is no residue on the nails if you are going chrome detailing.  Any hint of tacky layer or oils will cause the chrome to stick where you don’t want it to. I do a layer of GMS then wipe with Ipsopropyl Alcohol before lightly buffing the nail and dusting off before I add my detail work with ARTYgel and then rubbing in my chrome. For a set like this I allocate 1 hour 30 minutes per client. I’m very very lucky that 99% of my clients started to come to me because of the nail art I showcased on my socials so they do not take much convincing in that department. This has been so much easier since I moved over to magpie 18 months ago as the products just speak for themselves!”

MEET TEAM MAGPIE: NORTH LONDON EDUCATOR ANONA GRICE @NONAPHILLIPA

Could you tell us about how you joined the Nail Industry and became a Nail Educator for Magpie Beauty?

I did my first Nail course back in 2013 and soon after started working self employed within a Hair Salon and built my business up whilst working part time. In 2017 I finally went full time with my business and did my AET. Then I was invited to be a Magpie Educator in 2019 and have been teaching ever since! I’ve been using Magpie products since 2015 and have absolutely loved the products ever since! I don’t use anything else in my salon and I love teaching students about all the wonders of Magpie!

What are your favourite classes to teach?

Mani-Gel and Perfect Poly are some of my favourites as I enjoy seeing somebody brand new to the industry soaking up all the information and starting their journey. And with Perfect Poly I just love the product so much so I find it super fun to work with.

What advice would you give to someone wanting to become a Nail Educator for Magpie Beauty?

Knowledge is key! Knowing the Magpie products inside out so that you can answer people’s queries and questions. Standing out as an individual is also important to Magpie, everyone in the team has their own styles, skills and strengths. Your first step is having a teaching qualification and using everything Magpie.

What’s your favourite thing about being a Nail Educator for Magpie Beauty?

Watching my students grow within their own businesses and careers. Some of my students have trained with me from the beginning of their journeys and I absolutely love that! I enjoy seeing students again and again for courses and getting to know them personally and supporting them throughout it all. When I first trained there was no after support or business support so knowing that my students are comfortable messaging me with their queries and knowing they get the answer they require is super rewarding as an Educator. Also I am really passionate about Magpie Products so I love being about to talk about them all day!

Thank you Anona. We have loved hearing about your career so far as a Magpie Educator. You can follow Anona on Instagram @nonaphillipa and find her upcoming availability and contact details for training by clicking here.

HAVE YOU TRIED OUR NEW METALLIC WATERCOLOURS YET?

Brand Ambassador Hannah Leahy @hannah_leahy_nails shares her top tips and why she enjoys working with watercolours so much below.

“I love that you can do some detailed work using them but also it’s great for more abstract designs. I guess it’s because they are so versatile. I think just using them to create your own style rather than feeling they can only be used for a certain style is a good way to incorporate them into your designs. I found trying to follow other people’s tutorials was really helpful but it’s also fun to just use them and experiment!”

HANNAH’S TOP TIPS FOR WORKING WITH WATERCOLOURS

You need to work fast and use plenty of water for the METALLIC WATERCOLOUR.

Let the Paints fully dry before applying clear GMS or topcoat.

I like that if you aren’t happy with the design you can wipe away with PREP and try again.

Use the Water Colours over VELVET TOP COAT.

Thank you Hannah for sharing your top tips and inspirational sets. Remember to tag us in your recreations and use the hashtag #everythingmagpie @magpie_beauty for a chance to be featured on our Instagram. We can’t wait to see!

NEW MERRY & BRIGHT GLITTER COLLECTION

Have you got your hands on our latest glitter collection yet?

Our Christmas glitters are superfine holographic effects which give a rich rainbow finish…

To apply our glitters simply dip our APPLICATOR BRUSH into the bottle, and gently dab into the tacky (inhibition) layer of gel colour gently. Remember to rotate your brush so the glitter makes contact with the sticky layer first instead of the bristles.

Once the entire nail is coated, gently brush downward to burnish. Then dust any glitter away using our DUSTER BRUSH . Make sure you catch the glitter in a paper towel or SPILL TRAY and discard in a safe way to prevent any going into our water systems.

Next clean up the cuticle areas using our SIR TOOL gently (you can blunt this using a file if you find this too sharp) and file the free edge with a 240 file.

Finally encapsulate using  GIVE ME STRENGTH CLEAR then finish with your favourite top coat.

Treat yourself and your clients with  our NEW Christmas glitter collection by clicking HERE.

HALLOWEEN NAIL ART GALLERY

Check out our spook-tacular gallery from some of our super talented Ambassadors and Educators below for some Halloween nail art inspiration!

Magpie Senior Educator Sophie Hudd @sophrainbownails has blown us away with her incredible hand painted designs using a range of ARTYgels,  CHROME and JELLIES on strengthening gel manicures using our dream duo GET A GRIP and GIVE ME STRENGTH.

Magpie Brand Ambassador Alice Daisy Morrey @onenailtorulethemall has created the cutest spooky designs using a range of ARTYgels and GEL COLOURS also on strengthening gel manicures using our dream duo GET A GRIP and GIVE ME STRENGTH. We asked Alice how she manages to get such fun designs on her clients and she told us,

“I think it helps that I mainly post the crazier nail art designs on my Instagram so they can see what they can get, I also try to share inspiration from other nail artists on my stories so they get some ideas. Before every appointment I message and ask what they’re having, and I’ll send them a link to my Pinterest board so they can find some ideas there. I do have plenty of clients that don’t like crazy nails, but I’ve made it my niche so a lot of people come to me specifically for that, and I know who will get the crazier things and who to send the whackiest ideas to!”

We love the variety of Halloween design Magpie Educator Amanda Byrne @amanda_byrne_nail_artist has created on her clients. Amanda has used CHROME, GLITTERS, PIGMENTS, GEL COLOURS and ARTYgels to create her designs. Amanda shares,

“Most of my clients come with inspiration from other nail techs or Pinterest for what designs they want. I have a couple of clients that let me have free rain, they just give me a theme and we work from there. I love using the Artygels as they are perfect for creating intricate designs. The viscosity of them allows me to do super thin lines and details. My favourite brushes are the original striper and detailer brushes. I absolutely love doing Halloween designs as it’s my favourite time of year. I also love to get creative with my reels to help other nail techs and show them how to do certain characters, designs & techniques. I’m always looking on Pinterest, socials and artwork for inspiration to keep up with all the nail trends.”

Magpie Educator Anona Grice @nonaphillipa has created some incredibly intricate Halloween designs on some sculpted ACRYGEL extensions using a variety of GEL COLOURS and ARTYgels. Anona shares,

“I find when working with the Artygels and doing intricate artwork it’s a good idea to really run the product through the brush. My favourite brush is the Striper brush and paired with the artygels means they create really fine lines.”

If you are struggling with your nail art TEAM MAGPIE have a variety of live online, in classroom and pre recorded classes available. For further information please visit the education tab of our website by clicking HERE.

MEET OUR MAGPIES: LINDSEY DENNEY

Could you please introduce yourself and tell us about your nail career so far?

I’m Lindsey, (@lindseyede_nails_and_beauty) I’m 45, I got married last year after being with my partner James for nearly 20 years (I wanted to make sure he was the one), we have 2 children,2 rabbits and we live in Northamptonshire. I’ve been in the beauty industry for 14yrs, mainly a nail tech for the last 9 years.

In 2007 I decided on a career change and went back to college full-time with the support of James. I very nearly went into hairdressing as I always loved being creative with hair but my local college didn’t teach the particular course I wanted, so I decided to do a year of level 2 beauty and then level 3 holistic therapies. I worked part time in a local salon and also qualified in gel nails and acrylic nails whilst there.

I then became a full-time mum in 2010 until just after having my son in 2013. I had started doing my own nails and friends and family. This was mobile and some at home. We moved house in May 2015 and were able to set up a home salon in our 4thbedroom.  Through recommendation and word of mouth as a result of my creativity with nailart,  my business soon took off and by the end of 2015 I was doing  2-3 clients a day Mon – Fri.  Within 2 years I was full time. Whilst looking back at dates I found my old 2016 diary and most of those clients are still with me today.

My magpie addiction started in 2016 when they were just selling glitter and I had started following Sophie Hudd. Just like Magpies I am attracted to anything shiny and sparkly, so it was a perfect match.  When they started selling Gel colours I soon converted from my previous brand.  I was so impressed with the pigmentation and longevity of them. Soon followed their acrylic system and now I solely use Magpie.

What is your favourite thing about being a Magpie Technician?

I love that you can buy everything you need to be a Nail technician from one place, Magpie! I have found the products to be high quality, competitively priced and long lasting. I also love the friendly and helpful community it has built.

Which nail style/system do you enjoying creating with the most?

That’s a tough question, I mainly use the GAG/GMS, BMU & the acrylic system for my clients as I am a firm believer that one system doesn’t suit all, however I am really enjoying using BMU BUFF in pot version at the moment as I find it a gorgeous natural colour that has the perfect consistency for application.

Where would you like to see yourself in five years time?

In 5 years’ time, I would like to see myself as an educator either for Magpie or as an independent.  I am an advocate of high quality training and education which I feel is sometimes absent from our Industry in the UK. I have a passion for mentoring and developing people, so I would take pleasure in helping technicians to develop their skills. Equally, in helping technicians new to the industry in establishing their business practice. This is something that I have encountered informally within the Magpie community – I have been (and remain) an active contributor (helping people with issues) and I have similarly benefitted from the community myself.

What advice would you give to someone looking to start a career in the industry?

Research! Choose in-person courses that teach in depth knowledge of not just the practical side of nails but also the theory, health & safety, chemistry, pricing and the importance of professional only products and lamps etc. If possible, do your training with the brand as not all brands work the same. One of the reasons I love Magpie is because of the variety of courses they do, not only in application but business too. I would also advise them to set their business boundaries and policies early.

What is your favourite Magpie nail art range to work with?

Another tough question,  gel paints are an obvious one for any nail artist and the new Artygel paints are a must have but I also love playing around with foils and flakes! There are just endless possibilities

What are your top ten MUST HAVE Magpie products?

Thank you Lindsey! It has been lovely to read all about your inspirational nail journey so far. We love your work!

MEET TEAM MAGPIE: MAGPIE EDUCATOR RUTH MUNRO

We are very proud of our fabulous Educator, Ruth Munro @littleblankspaces who scooped the title for Educator of the Year at the Scottish NBL awards last weekend. Ruth has been teaching with us for 6 years, covering the Highlands of Scotland based in Inverness and  hosts regular online training via zoom too. She specialises in  business and social media as well as converting technicians who are new to Magpie. Ruth is also a finalist for the Scratch Star Awards in the ‘Nail Business Mentor’ and ‘Shooting Star’ categories taking place at the end of the month – we wish her the best of luck! You can read more about Ruth’s nail career in her interview below.

could you tell us about how you joined the nail industry and became a Nail Educator for Magpie Beauty?

I joined the nail industry almost nine years ago now, by purchasing an online nail course for gel extensions using tips. The following year I attending a week of private 1:1 training with a Nail Educator based in Edinburgh to become qualified in acrylics, e-file and nail art. At the time I was studying to be a secondary English teacher at the University of Glasgow. Over the next few years, I built up a base of clients in Glasgow and my hometown of Inverness.

When Magpie opened up their first applications to become an Educator, I sent my CV in thinking there was no chance I would ever have even be considered. So I was absolutely delighted when Sarah asked me to come down to bootcamp training at Magpie HQ in Chesterfield.

When I was offered the job, I decided to leave University to pursue my career as a Nail Technician and Educator fully, instead of completing my honours degree – this was the best decision I’ve ever made, despite almost everyone around me at the time telling me the opposite!

What advice would you give to someone wanting to become a Nail Educator for Magpie Beauty?

Attend as many of our courses as you can. Challenge yourself and be consistent on social media. To be an educator for Magpie you need to know the products inside out and be able to use a variety of product ranges too. You also need to showcase your knowledge and skills – the Magpie Facebook Group is a fantastic way to do this as well as using the hashtags #magpiebeauty #everythingmagpie on Instagram. You also need to be able to teach! So holding a teaching qualification is essential.

What is your favourite thing about being a Nail Educator for Magpie Beauty?

My students’ results. When my students tell me they have a new found confidence with their skills and application, or finally are able to charge their worth and make healthy annual profits I am delighted for them. When I trained to become a Nail Technician, there was no business or social media guidance and I was very much left to my own devices once I qualified. So it has always been a goal of mine to fill the gaps the industry had for such a vital part of being a Nail Technician – being able to run a business effectively!

Magpie Beauty are highly regarded in the industry for their high quality of cost effective products, customer care and support, transparency and close relationship with their consumers. Their ethos is something which I value and share with my students, it is another favourite thing I love about teaching for Magpie.

What are your favourite classes to teach?

Business management, conversions, social media and marketing. I love showing students how to get the most from their careers and making social media easy to understand and use. I also love welcoming those who are new to the brand and supporting them as they convert.

What awards have you been nominated for in the past/are currently nominated for?

In 2019 I won ‘Best Nail Art’ at the Scottish NBL awards and was a finalist for ‘Best use of Social Media’ in the Scratch Star Awards. Then I was a finalist in the Scratch Star awards for ‘Nail Team of the Year’ and ‘Best Uk Nail Blogger/Vlogger’ in 2021. Last year I placed second for ‘Nail Educator of the Year’ receiving a highly commended certificate from the Scottish NBL awards and won the title the following year in 2023. I am currently a finalist for ‘Nail Business Mentor of the Year’ and ‘Shooting Star’ in the Scratch star awards.

Thank you for sharing your nail career with us Ruth! If you would like to book a 1:1 or small group training session with Ruth online or in salon, you can find further information and booking details via her website linked here.

WATERCOLOUR NAIL ART TUTORIALS & INSPIRATION

Have you tried our new watercolours yet? Our palette has fifteen colours so you can create a wide range of nail art designs using them. Learn how to create marble, floral and animal illustration designs like our Magpie Technicians, Educators and Ambassadors have created by reading their tutorials below.

Magpie Brand Ambassador Pritchard @rebekahxpritchard used a base of  GAG PINK & GMS ROSA followed by a layer of VELVET TOP to mattify the nails before using the water colours. For the art, Rebekah mixed water with teal and applied in a wavy line across the nail, then diluted by adding more water and used a dry brush to soak up the excess water. Rebekah repeated this process to add each layer until she was satisfied with her waves. Using the white water colour, Rebekah applied in a different angle to the teal lines and blurred by adding more water, again soaking up any excess with a dry brush. Then she added a tiny amount of black water colour towards the edge of the nail to add dimension. Once the water colours were completely dry (she used a hand held fan to speed up the process) and applied TOP IT OFF.

Magpie Technician Lindsey Denney @lindseyede_nails_and_beauty shares the steps to her water colour design below:

❤︎ Use a base of GAG NOUGAT /GMS NOUGAT

❤︎ Apply one coat FAIRY DUST gel colour, whilst wet dab in some JESSEBELLE flakes and cure.

❤︎ Wipe with PREP & DEHYDRATE, then gently buff over the area where your art will be to give a smooth surface to work on.

❤︎ Use the Magpie ILLUSTRATOR BRUSH and WHITE ARTYgel gel to paint the white area in random shapes. Cure.

❤︎ Then VELVET TOP over the white arty gel area. Cure

❤︎ Use WATERCOLOUR BRUSH 1 and WATERCOLOUR PALETTE to create the flowers. Wait to fully dry before apply a coat of GMS CLEAR over the whole nail. Cure. Wipe with PREP & DEHYDRATE. Lightly buff over the whole nail and dust off with the SOFT BRUSH.

❤︎ Use the PREMIUM DETAILER 11 and BLACK ARTYgel to paint the line to frame the floral art. Cure.

❤︎ Use the Magpie SILICONE TOOL & apply ELIZABETH chrome over the black line. Soft brush to thoroughly dust off excess.

❤︎ Finish with LAD topcoat.

Magpie Brand Amabasador Alice Daisy Morrey @onenailtorulethemall used CAT GOT THE CREAM as the base followed by VELVET TOP. Alice used the WATERCOLOUR PALETTE and new WATERCOLOUR BRUSHES to create her design.

Magpie Technician Lil @the_beauty_shed02 shares the steps for her watercolour design below:

❤︎ Apply 2x layers of FRESH AS A DAISY curing each layer.

❤︎ Apply VELVET TOP and cure.

❤︎ Using WATERCOLOUR BRUSH 2 load brush with chosen colour from your watercolour palette and create a water downed mix.

❤︎ Apply a small triangle where you would like your petals. Blend out using your brush to create a petal shape. Use your brush to soak any excess water pulling down to the centre to create a Ombre effect. Keep wiping your brush. Once dried slightly overlap each petal to create a layered finish.

❤︎ Go in on some of the flowers/leafs with WATERCOLOUR 1 BRUSH with a slightly more dryer brush to create more defined details. wait for your watercolour art to fully dry. Then apply a thin layer if GMS CLEAR. This is where I add my gold leaf around my floral design. Cure

❤︎ Apply TOP IT OFF to finish.

Magpie Brand Ambassador Natalia Nicholson @natalia_nicholson_nails shares the products she used to create her abstract design below:

❤︎ GET A GRIP CLOUD

❤︎ PARADISE COLLECTION: Palm Bay, Turquoise Tide,

❤︎ Surf’s Up, Tropical Hibiscus, Beach Bum

❤︎ BLOOMING LOVELY GEL

❤︎ ANGEL GLITTER

❤︎ WATERCOLOUR BRUSH 1

❤︎ WATERCOLOUR BRUSH 2

❤︎ NAIL ART STICKERS 085 Rose Gold

HAVE YOU TRIED OUR COMPACT NEON PIGMENTS YET?

We have released seven new neon pigments, which brings our complete  compact pigment collection to a grand total of 37! Simply apply our pigment into the tacky layer of our GEL COLOUR, ARTYgels or VELVET TOP COAT and encapsulate before top coating. TEAM MAGPIE have shared their fabulous designs and tutorials using our NEON PIGMENT COLLECTION below.

To create her sunset ombré design, Magpie Educator Amanda Byrne @amanda_byrne_nail_artist applied TACKY WHITE ARTYgel to the whole nail and cured, then applied compact pigment CUBA, TURKEY & MADAGASCAR to the white. Amanda created a mixture of PINK JELLIE & FRESH AS A DAISY and applied the bottom half of the nail and then cured.  Next she applied VELVET TOP and cured. For the sun, she mixed a tiny amount of BANANA ARTYgel to the white ARTYgel and drew a half moon on the pink white jellie line. Amanda then drew a few lines using the same yellow mix to make it look like the sun is reflecting on the water and finished the design by drawing palm trees with BLACK ARTYgel, top coated with like a diamond.

Magpie Brand Ambassador, Alice Daisy Morrey @onenailtorulethemall used a base of GMS NUDIE and GMS CUPID, then created some swirls using the TACKY WHITE ARTYgel and applied all of the NEON PIGMENT COLLECTION to create funky design.

Magpie Brand Ambassador Natalia Nicholson @natalia_nicholson_nails used the following products to create her pigment nail art:

FEELING THE LOVE

TEAM MAGPIE have rounded up some of our Magpie users’ valentines designs. Check out their tutorials and top tips for nail art below!

Melanie Mana @melous_nails shares the steps to her rainbow chrome heart design…

1. Base colour of your choice. Cure each layer.

2. Apply a layer of clear GMS and cure.

3. Wipe the clear GMS layer thoroughly with PREP solution on a lint-free wipe.

4. Buff it with a 240 BUFFING FILE. Don’t forget sidewalls and cuticle area.

5. Wipe the dust with a fresh lint-free wipe soaked with prep solution.

6. Do your art with BLACK GEL PAINT and cure.

7. Add your CHROME with the SILICONE TOOL, brush off the excess.

8. GMS layer. Cure.

9. TOP COAT. Cure.

Melanie’s Top Tips

When doing chrome on a specific area of the nail i.e. not a full nail chrome, I find it important to use a new LINT-FREE WIPE when wiping the tacky layer of the GMS before and after roughing the surface. In doing so, you’re less likely to add inhibition layer residue on the base colour thus avoiding the chrome to stick to the base colour. On this design I’d also suggest adding the chrome dusts to the bottom hearts first and work your way up as dust is less likely to fly away and land on the other hearts.

Natalie Pitts @nataliepittsnaildesign used the following products for her love letter nail design:

GOOD GOLLY MISS MOLLY, FUNTIME FRANKIE & JUMPING FOR JOY GEL COLOURS

WHITE GEL PAINT

HEARTS GLITTER SHAPES

DOTTING TOOL

STRIPER BRUSH

MIXING PALETTE

Natalie shares her nail art tips with us, “To help build your confidence, you can always flash cure in between each stage of a design to secure the previous stage in place, that way if you make a mistake later on, you can wipe it away using a LINT-FREE WIPE and PREP & Dehydrate without having to start over. To help keep your lines straight, use the full length of the STRIPER BRUSH to your advantage. I find when doing stripes or art work that involves lines, the striper brush does most of the steady work for me! Just make sure that your brush is evenly loaded with product. A dotting tool is handy for more than just polka dot designs. I sometimes use it to ‘colour in’ a larger shape, to mix glitters and GMS, or even to create abstract flowers.”

Lily Moore @beautybylillylou Lily told us her top tip, “…with small detailed art like this, flash cure between each layer using the magpies LED LIGHT TORCH!  She takes us through each section of her valentines design below:

The Bee: I first applied PICCA-LILLY to get the base shape of the bee, then I used BLACK GEL PAINT to add dots to create the head, tail and  lines to create the bees stripes. Add 2 white dots to make the wings. You now have your little bee!

Daisy: I used WHITE GEL PAINT and made a small dot where the middle of the daisy would be then dots around where I wanted the petals. With a detail brush I drag from the petal dot into the middle of the flower dot to create the petals. These can be big or smaller depending on the size of the dots you do! Add a little dot of PICCA-LILLY to finish of your daisy!

Rose: Add A dot of SUMMER LOVING in a not so perfect circle (this helps make it look more of a rose shape) Then taking a darker colour on a fine brush, I used SAN FRANCISCO , add little  curved lines from the middle of the rose and making the lines longer as you head further out  to create that layered petal rose effect.

Heart flower/ tulip: I used HOLLYWOOD  to make a small swirly line, added another line of that then added some leaves, this creates the stem for the flower. Then took a detail brush at an angle with LOUISIANA  on to create two small lines together to make a heart shape!

Joana Barkley @thebeautybarbyjo started with a neutral base of COME WHAT MAY. Once cured she wiped over with some PREP. Then Joana mixed JOY PIGMENT with PLAIN JANE to create the bright pink colour. Using the STRIPER BRUSH she outlined the top and tail french design and cured. Joana repeated the same design but on the opposite side of the nail using BELLA ROUGE. Next Joana applied a layer of Clear GMS, cured and wiped over with PREP. Using the DOTTING TOOL she added small dots along each colour block, created hearts and cured. She used the STRIPER BRUSH to create the tip of the heart and added the little eyes with BLACK & WHITE GEL PAINTS. After curing, she finished with LIKE A DIAMOND TOP COAT.

Thank you to our Magpie Readers for sharing their top tips and inspirational sets. Remember to tag us in your valentines recreations and use the hashtag #everythingmagpie @magpie_beauty for a chance to be featured on our Instagram. We can’t wait to see!

❤︎ CANDY CANE, FALL FROM GRACE

❤︎ FESTIVE STICKERS 003, 165

You can watch Sarah’s reel tutorial by clicking here.

Kelly Scothorn @asprettyas_nailsbykelly shares the steps to her fantastic grinch design below:

1. Apply your chosen base colour. Once cured, wipe away the inhibition layer. Using GREEN GEL PAINT, create the Grinch’s head and neck on the top half of the nail, ensuring you leave enough space at the top for the Grinch’s hair. Once you are happy with the shape, cure.

2. Using a fine DETAILER BRUSH, draw in the shoulders by bringing curved lines from the base of the neck to the sides of the nail. Infill the shape and cure for 60 seconds.

3. Add small yellow dots using a DOTTING TOOL for the eyes, and flash cure. Using a striper brush, carefully draw the outline of the eyes with BLACK GEL PAINT. Add lines for the eyebrows, nose and mouth. Flash cure.

4. Using a small DETAILER BRUSH, add fine lines into the eyebrows and add pupils into the eyes. Then, apply GREEN GEL PAINT to the top of the Grinch’s head, bringing the lines you create to a sharp point. Fully cure.

5. Carefully outline the Grinch using either a striper or DETAILER BRUSH. Flash cure as you go along. Using either the very tip of a detailer brush or a DOTTING TOOL, apply the freckles, chin and V shape under his neck. Cure.

6. Apply tiny fine lines around the outer edge of the Grinch’s body, and add numerous V shapes on his shoulders and chest. This will create a fur-like effect. Add frown lines with the BLACK GEL PAINT, and fully cure for 60 seconds.

7. Using white gel paint and a DOTTING TOOL, add small dots to build up the fluffy scarf. Cure for 60 seconds.

8. Apply RED GEL PAINT with a DETAILER BRUSH to create the cape. Add white dots in the background with the small end of a DOTTING TOOL to create the snow. Once happy, give the nail a full cure and apply your chosen top coat.

Senior Educator Sophie Hudd @sophrainbownails used the following Magpie’s to create her cute Christmas mash up:

❤︎ HOLLY GARLAND

❤︎ CANDY CANE

❤︎ HEATHER GREEN

❤︎ BAH HUMBUG

❤︎ NORTH STAR

Magpie Brand Ambassador Jess Kemp @jessrosebeauty shares the steps to her fabulous cable knit design below:

1. Apply 2 coats of BLACK FOREST on the little, index & thumb fingers and finish with top it off.

2. To create the full Cable knit nails apply 2 coat of BLACK FOREST then VELVET MATTE TOP COAT. Mix BLACK FOREST with a bit of BLACK GEL PAINT and paint the cable knit design with DETAILER BRUSH – do not cure – sprinkle with clear acrylic powder ICE QUEEN then double cure. Dust off excess.

3. To create the Chrome stars & Cable Knit design, using a liner brush section the nail with 2 coats of BLACK FOREST diagonally on the bottom of the nail. Apply GMS over the entire nail -prep & dehydrate over – buff the nail – prep & dehydrate over again.

4. Use the DETAILER BRUSH with BLACK GEL PAINT create the stars (watch reel tutorial by clicking here) then cure. Chrome over using ELIZABETH DUST and dust off excess. Mix DIANA DUST with  GMS and use DOTTING TOOL and pop in centre of star. Cure.

5. Decant TOP IT OFF onto palette to seal the star design using DETAILER BRUSH and cure. Decant VELVET MATTE TOP COAT onto palette and paint over BLACK FOREST and cure.

MEET OUR MAGPIES: INTERVIEW WITH HOLLIE JEX

Hello Hollie. Could you please introduce yourself and tell us about your nail career so far?

Hi! I’m Hollie and my Instagram is @nailsbyh0llie. I started my nail journey with the lovely and super talented Sinead Bulley in August 2021, I have completed the manicure, gel colour and builder gel courses. I’ve always loved having my nails painted and I love being creative with art so after finding @sophrainbownails on Instagram during lockdown and then several other magpie brand ambassadors and seeing their amazing nail designs using Magpie products I decided to book onto the courses – I needed to get my hands on their gel products!! Now I’m a Magpie addict!

What advice would you give to someone who wants to begin a career in the industry?

Do your research – it’s so important! Choosing a brand can be difficult with there being so many different brands to choose from. I chose Magpie and use everything Magpie due to their products being manufactured in the UK, no/low HEMA, cruelty free, long lasting wear and obviously how beautiful they are. The Magpie Educators are extremely knowledgeable and so helpful during and after the courses! Also practice makes progress.. if you’re struggling with a certain design keep practicing, find a tutorial and do it over and over again – don’t give up!

Which nail style do you enjoy creating the most?

I love anything floral and seasonal! My favourite seasonal nails to design are for Christmas – I just love how creative you can be with so many different ideas.

What is your favourite professional range to work with and why?

My favourite range to work with is gel, the ‘dream duo’ of Get A Grip & Give Me Strength really is a dream! It helps grow your natural nails, adding the extra strength to keep your nails long, being able to create a structured mani and they just last so well. The gel colours are all super pigmented and so beautiful, it really does make it so hard to choose your next colour!

What is your favourite Magpie nail art range to work with?

It has to be the Magpie gel paints, the formula and thickness of these make creating nail designs and detail so easy. They come in so many different colours, you can also create custom shades by mixing them together to get the colour you require.

What are you top 5 must have Magpie products?

Where would you like to see yourself in 5 years time?

I would love to have and design my own little nail studio in the garden and to have some lovely regular clients! I currently work full time for the NHS but one day in the future I’d like to be able to split my time more evenly.

Thank you Hollie! It has been lovely to read all about your inspirational nail journey so far. We love your work!

HALLOWEEN NAIL ART TUTORIALS

TEAM MAGPIE have chosen a selection of some super talented Magpie Techs who have kindly shared the steps to their amazing Halloween nail art designs with us. We LOVE seeing your nail art creations so please keep posting them to our Facebook group and tag us on our Instagram page!

Sarah Claire Jones @beautybysarah_20 shares the steps to her stunning chrome Halloween design below:

1. Start with applying a natural pink BUILDER GEL OR GEL POLISH to the nail, then go in with your MATTE TOP COAT and cure for 30 seconds.

2. Pick your pigments of choice, here I went with magpie compact pigments BORA BORA and FIJI. Use the magpie APPLICATOR BRUSH to go into you first pigment and dap generously to the tip of the nail going a third of the way up the nail. Wipe off the excess product from the brush and continue with the applicator brush to blend your first colour into the MATTE TOP COAT. Once it’s seamless, go in with your second colour and blend from you first colour to about two thirds of the way up the nail. Wipe off the excess product and start to blend this in with the matte top coat. Once finished cure for the remaining 30 seconds.

3. Find your chrome of choice, I chose magpie COMPACT CHROME TWYLA to complement the purple pigments. Apply your NO WIPE TOP COAT to the nail and cure for 30 seconds. With your tool of choice, generously apply chrome all over the nail, gently brush any excess off with the MAGPIE DUSTER BRUSH, and cure for the remaining 30 seconds.

4. Gently file the free edge of the nail and go over the top with a CLEAR BASE COAT and ensure to cap the edges. Here you can go in with any design you like, or leave as it is! I chose a Halloween pumpkin and ghost, but you can add almost anything over your ombré and chrome design. Remember to TOP COAT once done to complete the look!

Nat Hsog @nailsbynatalina shares how she created her cute Halloween nail art, “For a base I applied BMU BUFF using the GEL BRUSH 4. I then used TANYA HIDE and TOFFEE APPLE for the full coverage nails. I drew shapes for the pumpkins using the same colours and a wavy french style for the ring fingers and thumb. Using the WHITE GEL PAINT and PREMIUM DETAILER BRUSH 9, I painted the ghosts. I outlined everything in BLACK GEL PAINT+ and PREMIUM DETAILER BRUSH 11. Then using the DOTTING TOOL, I did the dots for the stars and added the lines. I finished it off with TOP IT OFF CLEAR and RHUBARB & ROSE CUTICLE OIL.” We LOVE these Nat!

Shell Harding @unicronbeauty.19 takes us through her incredible Beatlejuice set below,

“I started with a base of PLAIN JANE on four nails and the NEON GREEN GEL PAINT for the ring finger. Wipe off the tacky layer.

I then used BLACK GEL PAINT to create the pinstripes using the NAIL STRIPER BRUSH. I topped these nails with  VELVET TOP. To finish the pinstripe nails off I used NEON GREEN GEL PAINT and the DOTTING TOOL to create the bottom of the slime drips. I pulled these out with the STRIPER BRUSH towards the cuticle.

For Beetlejuice, I added a layer of VELVET TOP over the PLAIN JANE background before sketching the main shape out in pencil. I then used the PREMIUM DETAILER BRUSH 11 and BLACK GEL PAINT to draw the outline and details. I then used PREMIUM DETAILER 6 to fill in the colour. I used PEARLS A SINGER mixed with GOODNESS GRACIOUS ME to create the skin colour. I used BOBBY DAZZLER for the shirt and around the eyes. I used TASTY TINA for the inside of the mouth. I used PEARLS A SINGER for the tongue. I used PINA COLADA for the hair. I used NEON YELLOW GEL PAINT for the eyes. I added a pupil with black gel paint and a dotting tool. I mixed NEON GREEN GEL PAINT with PLAIN JANE  to make the neon pastel green for the teeth. I topped the nail with VELVET TOP.”

Shells top tips…
Start with the outline and then fill in the colours. This way you can always go over any overspill with a second go over the outline. Cure between each colour so you can wipe off any mistake you make.

Bethany Stutz @houseofcolour_hairandbeauty shares the products she used to create spooky design with products listed below:

PLAIN JANE

BLACK BETTY

ALOE VERA

Grinch foil

WHITE+ GEL PAINT

BLACK+ GEL PAINT

GAG CLEAR

GMS CLEAR

LAD

“Laying difference products are the best way to create different effects! Using foil underneath nail art (like I did on the little finger) makes nail art have a fun twist! Using the same colours throughout the nail art designs makes the overall look more uniform – but still fun!”

We love Beth Yeandle’s @studiobnailsandbeauty  pretty pink Halloween nail design!

“So to create these for the clear base we used GAG CLEAR and GMS ROSA, for the spider nail we used PINK JELLY, and then used BLACK GEL PAINT for the spider, used a DOTTING TOOL for the body and then the STRIPER BRUSH to pull out the legs!

For the pumpkin we used SOUTH CAROLINA and ALOE VERA for the stalk, outlined and details with BLACK GEL PAINT and STRIPER BRUSH.

For the ghostie we used WHITE GEL PAINT with the STRIPER (can you tell my favourite brush lol) then DOTTING TOOL with BLLACK GEL PAINT for the eyes and mouth. For the sparkles we used a DOTTING TOOL with SOUTH CAROLINA and BEVERLY HILLS drew a dot and then pulled out lines to create the sparkle with the STRIPER BRUSH.

For the heart stitch we used SOUTH CAROLINA and BEVERLY HILLS , drew the colours first with a heart cut out, then outlined the heart and drew the with BLACK GEL PAINT and STRIPER BRUSH

Then the spider web heart, made the heart with DOTTING TOOL using SOUTH CAROLINA, pulled down to create the point of the heart and then used WHITE GEL PAINT and STRIPER to create the web!

We finished off using TOP IT OFF CLEAR over all nails and RHUBARB & ROSE CUTICLE OIL to finish.

My top tips…trust the process – most designs look nothing like you want them too until the last details ! A thin Striper brush is super helpful and gel paints are great as they are thick and easy to draw your details with!”

Sarah Markham @thepampernest shares the steps to her spokctacular scream set below:

“I applied the ALMOND FULL ON TIPS with CLEAR BMU POT, cut down and shaped to clients preference then started to paint in this order –

Little finger & thumb
I applied two layers of JELLY BABY then a layer of TOP IT OFF CLEAR. I then chromed PANDORA in with my gloved finger, went back over with the magpies SILICONE TOOL  to really shine them up. Gently ran a 240 GRIT FILE over the free edge before applying GMS CLEAR over the chrome to protect it (always cap!) Once cured I wiped the tacky layer off then created my blood drips with SCARLET FEVER.

Ring finger
I applied two layers of BLACK BETTY. I then wiped the tacky layer off and drew a white heart with magpies WHITE GEL PAINT, cured, then wrote “CALL ME” with BLACK GEL PAINT. Adding some stars and dots with JELLY BABY.

Middle finger
I applied two layers of BLACK BETTY, removed tacky layer, drew screams face with WHITE GEL PAINT, cured, then drew his eyes, nose and mouth with BLACK GEL PAINT and cured. I added a little shadowing to his face with GOODNESS GRACIOUS ME, a little heart with JELLY BABY and stars and dots with WHITE GEL PAINT.

Pointer finger
One layer of GAG CUPID and one layer of GMS CUPID, removed tacky layer. Drew the French tip with BLACK GEL PAINT, cured, then added some hearts and stars using JELLY BABY and WHITE GEL PAINT.

Finished off with my favourite top coat – TOP  IT OFF CLEAR.”

MEET OUR MAGPIES: INTERVIEW WITH BETH YEANDLE

Hi guys! My name is Beth and I run Studio B – Nails & Beauty (@studiobnailsandbeauty). I have just celebrated 1 year of opening Studio B however I only went full time in March 2022 (best decision ever can I add). I studied Beauty Therapy at college and nails and brows were always my passion! I transformed my childhood bedroom at my parents house into a small studio room where all the magic happens.

The inspiration for my nail room is just how I would like my WHOLE house to be if my partner had no input 🤣 Pink, colourful, fun patterns, and just lots of things to look at! I think this reflects a lot on my favourite type of nail designs/colours, anything bright and loud!

My advise for someone who wants to begin a career in the industry would be to literally just dive in head first and go for it! Don’t get me wrong I doubted myself a few times beforehand and that is so normal. But I can quite happily say I’ve never had a job before this that I actually look forward to going in every single day. You can be creative and chat to all different kinds of people at the same time what more could you want!

I would say my favourite style of nails would be pick & mix sets, I love planning them out on paper with the client and just trusting the process as it all comes together! Plus it’s a bit of everything which is always fun.

My favourite proffesional range to use would definitely be Magpie’s Get a grip and Give me strength duo. I’ve never used a combination of products that lasts so well on my clients, my clients always come back with no chips or lifting (if they’re using their cuticle oil!!!) it’s so easy to work with, comes in SO many gorgeous shades so there’s something for everyone.

Looking back the advise I would’ve given myself when I first started would be that practice makes perfect. Find your own way of doing things that works for you. My first ever flame I drew on a nail I was so unhappy with (looking back it wasn’t that bad) but now I am so confident with them because I’ve probably drawn about 100 flames now! Also don’t be afraid to ask for help! The amount of DMs I have sent to educators or even just fellow nail techs like “how do you do that?!” everyone in the industry is always happy to help.

My favourite Magpie nail art range has to be the gel paints. These were a game changer when it came to perfecting my nail art skills, they are so easy to work with and are slightly thicker giving a lot more control, and they come in so many colours too!!!

Where do I see myself in 5 years time? It would be an absolute dream of mine to become a brand ambassador for Magpie Beauty, maybe an educator one day but baby steps!! I can see myself hopefully expanding my business, maybe finding a larger space to work from and having more services come from Studio B! But honestly I’m just going with the flow and enjoying every second, what will be will be!

Thank you Beth! It has been lovely to read all about your inspirational nail journey so far. We love your work and nail space.

HAVE YOU TRIED OUR COMPACT PIGMENTS YET?

You can create easy and effective nail art designs using our new compact pigments range. Simply apply into the cured layer of our GEL COLOURS/PAINTS or VELVET TOP  using our APPLICATOR BRUSH.

Mrs Magpie showcases her seamless  ombré above which she created using HAWAII, ZANZIBAR & BALI pigments blended over a base of CUPID GMS.

Magpie Educator Amanda Byrne @amanda_byrne_nail_artist shares her steps for the perfect ombré blend using our pigments below:

1. Load your APPLICATOR BRUSH with pigment then blot out any excess on your couch roll.

2. Apply the pigment to the nail making sure you get an even coverage.

3. Give your brush a good wipe on your couch roll, removing 90% of the pigment.

4. Go back to the nail and where the pigment ends, work your brush up towards the free edge. By removing the excess product it allows you to gently fade the pigment out.

5. Using the DUSTER BRUSH, gently remove any excess on the nail.

6. Cap the nail in VELVET TOP or AATB (to help the blend).

7. Finish using your favourite TOP COAT.

Magpie Educator Sophie Hudd @sophrainbownails used a base of GAG/GMS PEACH, then applied VELVET TOP and created her ombré with THAILAND pigment. Sophie painted flames using ICE LOLLY gel colour, added chrome outlines with NOELLE DUST and finished with LAD. We are drooling over these!

To create her simply stunning set, Magpie Educator Sinead Bulley @nailsbysinead13 used a base of GAG & GMS TRUFFLE then topped with VELVET TOP. Sinead applied BALI, ZANZIBAR, HAWAII & TAHITI, encapsulated with GMS CLEAR and added GOLD LEAF. Finally sinead created chrome pumpkins using ELIZABETH COMPACT CHROME over WHITE GEL PAINT and finished with TOP IT OFF CLEAR.

Magpie BA Hannah Leahy @hannah_leahy_nails shares the steps to her rainbow design below:

  1. Apply GAG & GMS as your base.
  2. Apply VELVET TOP.
  3. Dab and blend the Pigments into the matte top coat. Buff the free edge and apply a layer of GMS CLEAR.
  4. Light buff over GMS and use BLACK GEL PAINT around the edges, use the silicone tool and STARSHINE to chrome over the gel paint.
Apply a layer of GMS CLEAR and Top coat using LAD.

Magpie BA Kathleen Ryan @kmrnailss used a base of GAG & GMS PEACH then used ZANZIBAR & HAWAII pigments over VELVET TOP to create her beautiful mermaid scale base. Kathleen also used JUNE BUG,  BILLIE FLAKES, and finished with LAD.

MEET OUR MAGPIES: INTERVIEW WITH KATY SULLIVAN

Hello Katy. Could you introduce yourself to and tell us about your nail career so far please?

Hi! I’m Katy Sullivan, my Instagram is @polished_katysullivan. I began my training in 2013 after deciding University wasn’t for me. I did two years in college completing my Nail Services qualification and loved it! Whilst doing my course I worked part time in a children’s play centre and began building my client base from my bedroom in my parents house. By October 2015 I needed to find a base so I rented a desk in a busy salon and I was there for 18 months until January 2017 when I opened my own salon Polished. Having my own shop and amazing loyal client base gave me the opportunity to purchase a larger premises in July 2019 where we have been ever since! My business is nearly 7 years old but I’ve been in the nail industry now for nearly 9 years. Each year gets better and better!

Could you share some pictures of your nail space and explain your style and inspiration?

So when I moved to my current shop I just wanted to get out of my comfort zone of black, white and more black. I wanted girly-ness! I adored the pink, floral look. My nan actually done the flowers at the fabulous age of 75!! My nail desk I wanted as super functional and tidy (OCD me needed it). I always loved using 2 lamps to minimise clients brushing up against their clothes crossing themselves over so I ensured I got myself a desk where my lamps could sit either side and at a comfortable place for clients.  Next year I hope to redecorate… I feel I’ve outgrown the pink and would love a more grown up and calming  space.

What is your favourite Magpie nail art range to work with?

THE GEL PAINTS… I cannot describe how much these paints have made my nail art easier and better. The pigment, the texture, the colours, the versatility… the list could go on about all the reasons I love them. They’re beautiful to mix with other colours to get the perfect shade and the pigment makes them perfect for nail art.

What advise would you give to someone who wants to begin a career in the industry?

Invest your time into yourself and practise. If you can’t do that little daisy flower then sit and do it over and over and over again… the more you do it the more you will develop your skills. If you venture far back into my Instagram you’ll see some nails that will make you giggle but this was one time in my career I had the time to spend repeating nail art techniques till I felt I could do it. Your style and skills develop overtime so do not compare yourself to others… for years I gave up with French tips. I just COULDN’T do them, but during lockdown I sat and included them in my nail art designs and now I feel so comfortable doing them for my clients. Another bit of advice is give credit where credit is due. If you find inspiration from a fellow nail technicians then tell them. There is nothing more gratifying than feeling like you’ve inspired someone!

Which nail style do you enjoy creating the most?

Oh gosh what a hard question! I love having all the time in the world to really let myself have a play around. I love clients who let me do whatever I like especially when I know what they like. I would say floral patterns and really intricate patterns are some of my favourite nail arts. I also do love a butterfly!

What are you top 5 must have Magpie products?

Oooo hard one!

  1. THE GEL PAINTS – because of just about 1 million reasons
  2. HANKY PANKY acrylic – it’s just a perfect nude
  3. ELIZABETH – because no-one wants yellow gold chrome
  4. AMELIA – because I’ve never known a glitter to be the go to for every colour
  5. DETAILER – because it’s the only brush I’ve never had to trim for a perfect tip.

Which Magpie techs inspire you?

Can I say all of them? One of my first follows when I got interested in Magpie was Sophie Hudd @sophrainbownails. I loved her use of colour, her boldness in designs and how much you could really see she loved her job. Her designs are endless and she is always the first person I click on for some inspiration!

I adore Rebecca Pritchard @rebekahxpritchard too. I love her simple but yet complex and clean designs. I always think her nails show so much skills in knowing the products she is using.

What is your favourite professional range to work with and why?

My main nail enhancement treatment is acrylic. I then add colour and designs using gel! I’ve always loved acrylic from when I first ever done it. I preferred sculpting than tips but I think that’s just a personal preference!

I love how strong acrylic can be and you can completely transform some clients nails using this treatment.

Looking back what advise would you have given to yourself at the start of your nail career?

Advice I would of given myself earlier in my career is not to compare your skills and finished sets to anyone else. Everyone’s working at their own pace and level and everyone is different. I found working to my own strengths is what helped my business progress as it has!

Where would you like to see yourself in 5 years time?

In 5 years time I would see myself still sat at my little nail desk, still doing what I love on my lovely clients knowing how far I’ve come from my bedroom in my parents house. That would really be the best thing.

Thank you Katy! It has been lovely to read all about your inspirational nail journey so far. We love your work and nail space.
